Last weekend, Casy and I started thinking about our garden. Since we're staying put for awhile, we decided to go all out this year.
We planted a bunch of seeds indoors and they're already starting to come up! We did lettuce, basil, pickling cucumbers and regular cucumbers, Brussels sprouts, beans, cherry tomatoes (three colors!), and beefsteak tomatoes. I planted three containers of sweet peas on the deck and am planning a butterfly garden, which I won't be able to sow until May/June. I'd also like to plant some berry bushes so I can make jam later, but we probably won't do those from seed.
And remember those pictures of sweet, fat, sleeping cats? They don't live here anymore. Now we have two crazy animals racing around the house, unraveling every ball of yarn they come across.
Claude and Wilbur obviously have spring fever, so I planted a cat garden, hoping that bringing some of the outdoors in will help appease them. I can't wait for that to be ready for them.
This next week, when Casy is off on his spring break, he's going to build a couple of raised beds for our veggies and then we'll be able to sow some of our early planting seeds together. He'll also be planting some potatoes in garbage cans.
We're taking the time to educate ourselves about gardening this year. There's so much to learn, but we figure if we learn a handful of new things each year, by the time we can afford to buy a chunk of land we'll know enough to plant an amazing garden right off the bat. This garden is also the beginning of a couple of other ventures...specifically canning, pickling, and preserving the food that we grow. More to come on that.
In the meantime, we'll be thinning our sprouts, planning our plant placement (alliteration, anyone?), and dreaming of vegetables.
Love, T.
