One Down...

Oh, pairs of things.

I love the idea of knitting them,
(they are so cozy, so useful, and so beautiful)
but having to knit two of the same thing...in a row...
is usually more than I can handle.

It's like...you knit something awesome, cast off, start to admire your gorgeous hand-knit item...
and then suddenly you are faced with the reality that you have to knit that thing all over again before it's useful in any way.

And you're all, "Really? Not cool."

And your project's all, "Whatever. You're the one who decided to knit me."

So then you wait 177 million days before starting the second half.

That's how it usually goes for me, anyway.

177 million days...starting now.

this was my first colorwork project and it has absolutely revolutionized my knitting world.

Tonight

Casy is coaching high school baseball.

Claude and Wilbur are trying to look innocent.

We will drink wine, eat homemade pizza, and watch a movie.

I will finish a Christmas Valentine's Day Beginning of March hat for my love.

And we will brace ourselves before a very long day of housekeeping tomorrow.

Just Add a Button

I've had a picture in my head of a cowl I'd like to make and one skein of a gorgeous yarn I wanted to work with, but couldn't find a pattern to match. So I thought I would give it a go on my own, without a pattern.

When I completed it, I thought it was a total failure. I was ready to rip it all out and try again. The neck was too wide and it was too short for what I originally had in mind...but after all of the work I put into it, ripping it all out seemed so sad!

But I started playing with it a bit and soon realized it could be saved. I added a little button and now I have something worth wearing, although not what I originally had in mind. And I've learned many lessons about how to start making something without a pattern (things like measuring gauge, taking measurements in the first place, having a plan before jumping in...that sort of thing).

So in the end, it all worked out.

The yarn is from here, bought while we were at the Sheep and Fiber fest last year. The pattern is still in my head.

There is something so endearing about little baby socks. I'm kind of obsessed with them. I figure if I start now, our kids could have a pair for every day of their infancy.

But since I'm still catching up on my Christmas knitting (ahem), I don't have time to spend on 365 pairs of miniature socks. I can only squeeze them in when absolutely necessary...for real children, perhaps.

So when a friend of mine recently welcomed his first child, I got started on a little something for their little girl.

The pattern is from Purl Bee.

The yarn is alpaca (so soft).

Wilbur, as always, participated in the photo shoot. Later that day, I found the X on the floor (thankfully unharmed), a victim of Wilbur's curiosity and instinct. I can't really blame him. They are irresistible.

#1. Knit a Sweater

This was such a quick knit that I'll probably make a couple more before the winter months end. I'll make them longer all around (sleeves and bodice), and add just a couple more stitches around the body.

I might also experiment with another yarn.

Now...Christmas presents.

Knitting for Baby

No, not our baby! A friend of mine is giving birth in November, so I made something for her new son or daughter.

It's my first garment, so there are a few mistakes thrown in, especially where assembly is concerned.

All in all, I'm happy with it, though. The motif on the back is an old Eastern motif and it's said to bring luck and protection to whoever wears it. I like that about it.

The pattern is from this book, which I love.

Casy is reading some texts before his first day of training tomorrow and we'll be leaving in about an hour to go eat some Indian food with our friends C and S.

Wilbur asked me to post a picture of him looking out the window and I told him I would. He's sitting behind our thrift store curtains in our new living room, trying not to be too aware of the camera...he really wanted it to be a candid shot.
